Welcome back Year 2! We hope you had a restful and enjoyable half term break!
This term, we will continue our Space topic (although our Week 1 writing is not very spacey as you will see). We are really missing you all and are excited to see pictures or your learning this week. Hopefully we will all be back together soon.
On Thursday, we will be writing instructions for making pancakes. Here is a pancake recipe if you haven’t yet made any and would like to do so before this task.
Please note you will need some practical resources for Wednesday’s maths lesson. Useful resources to gather before you start:
- Play dough
- Straws
- Marshmallows/Blutack
- Boxes that you can examine/dismantle
- Lolly sticks/cocktail sticks/spaghetti

This week we are going to practise reading and writing common exception words. These are words that don’t follow the spelling patterns and rules we have learnt. Here is a common exception word mat that you can use throughout the week to support your learning. There is also a bank of common exception word activity sheets that you can access if you would like to.
Phonics:
Today look at the alternative pronunciation for a: acorn (ai).

Task 1: What is the Meaning of Lent?
Learning Objectives: R.E: Learn about the meaning of Lent. English: Use demarcated sentences to answer questions about Lent.

Depending on your child’s ability you can choose from three different challenges:
Spicy Challenge: Answer the worksheet, found in the above, using correctly demarcated sentences.
Very Spicy Challenge: Use the worksheet and to extend your answers by using conjunctions, and, but, or because.
Extremely Spicy Challenge: Write a paragraph about Lent which includes the conjunctions and, but, because and so.
Task 2: Maths – Shape
Learning Objective: Count Sides on a 2D Shape.

Extra Challenge (as well as the worksheet): Have a go using this interactive pegboard to make 2D shapes. Try to make as many as you can.
Task 3: PE – Static Balance
Learning Objective: Balance on a line or low beam with a good stance. Explore ways to balance on a line.
This week we are introducing the ‘Tightrope’ theme, using the Real PE online resources.
Please use your new personal log in, sent in the final week of last term.
For the ‘Adventure’ (warm-up) you will be setting up your circus for tightrope walking! It would be great to have these things to help bring it to life:
- Blanket/towel for your big top
- Toys to take part in the circus
- Instruments/things to shake or bang for your grand opening music
- String/skipping rope/tape to make your tightrope.

Task 1: Writing Instructions
Learning Objective: Write instructions for making pancakes, using imperative verbs and time connectives.
Watch the video lesson or use the PowerPoint slides and then write instructions for making a pancake. If you have made pancakes recently, maybe you could add in a Top Tip!
Reduced Challenge: Write an instruction next to each image on the sheet.
Main Task: Use the template to write your instructions.
Extra Challenge: Write your own instructions. Can you add in any adverbs (carefully/slowly) or technical vocabulary?
Task 2: Maths – Shape
Learning Objective: Count vertices on a 2D shape.

Reduced Challenge (instead of the worksheet): Print and fold these double-side flashcards, or you could make your own! Keep practising until you can name all of the shapes! Try looking at the shape side and then trying to describe the properties too.

Task 3: Music
Learning Objective: Explore the difference in spikey and smooth (staccato and legato) in a new piece of music and use a percussion instrument to create a beat.

Task is to create a short piece of music using a percussion instrument, it could be a pot, pan or using body percussion. Here are the PowerPoint slides and here is a link to the piece of music we are using by Gustav Holst.
